Hours for a Cause was created to address the most common barriers to providing pro bono services. According to the American Bar Association, two of the top barriers are lack of time and lack of the necessary skills or expertise. Hours for a Cause gives all attorneys the opportunity to participate in changing the world, one billable hour at a time. Instead of learning an entirely new area of law or falling behind on your client work, you can pledge to donate a day of your time to a legal services organization that provides free legal services to those that need it most.
Overcoming barriers to providing pro bono service by inspiring lawyers to effect positive change by giving back to our communities.
Our vision is that all lawyers give back to our community through pro bono service, monetary contributions, or a combination of the two.
It all started during the family separation crisis. Attorney Liz Nielsen was driven to help, but between a busy estate planning practice and a complete unfamiliarity with immigration law, she decided to donate a day of her billable time to a legal services organization providing free legal representation to asylum seekers.
According to Liz, "As I hit the donate button, it occurred to me that there were probably lots of attorneys like me, who wanted to give back in the wake of the immigration crisis, but didn’t have the time or skills to provide pro bono legal representation."
And so Hours for a Cause was born. Liz continues to provide pro bono legal services in her area of expertise by representing a local nonprofit in guardianship cases. But when a crisis arises outside of her practice area or geographic location, Liz pledges a day of her billable rate.
It’s a win-win. You support the causes that you feel passionate about. The legal services organizations on the front lines get funding to provide more free legal services.
Please help us build a better community, one billable hour at a time!
